We took a little extra time this week to release power rankings to avoid overreacting from the first games of the season. Not much has changed from our preseason power rankings, but things are a little closer at the top. In addition, it looks like the conference has split into two-team tiers.

Jacksonville State (0-1)

Score (of 100): 94 (-3 from last wk)
Coach John Grass and the Gamecocks are still in first place after losing to Big Ten powerhouse Michigan State. We found out a lot about their defense: the front seven is physical, and the secondary is nowhere near as good as last year. The real question is where was DaMarcus James and the JSU running game last week? Let us hope the long week will result in a win at ranked Chattanooga.

Eastern Illinois is still a good football team. The Panther’s passing game is still one of the best in the league, and the running game did enough on Saturday to keep Minnesota’s defense honest. So, why is Eastern Illinois not at the top of the OVC? Turnovers are their Achilles heel. To top things off, they had a punt blocked and missed their only field goal attempt.

Tennessee State (1-0)

Score: 79 (-7)
Playing NAIA schools did not do the Tigers any favors last week. The verdict is still out on Tennessee State, but the fans docked them a handful of points simply because they were not a talking point last week.

Eastern Kentucky (1-0)

Score: 76 (+7)
The Colonels were the movers and shakers of the week. Precisely, the EKU running game was doing most of the moving and shaking. 400 yards on the ground against FCS foe Robert Morris earned Eastern Kentucky a lot of love from the fans and OVC ball writers alike.

5

UT-Martin-Power-Rankings
UT Martin (0-1)

Score: 56 (-1)
The Skyhawks’ defense gave the Kentucky mascot a workout last Saturday. Coach Jason Simpson did not have any nice words for the defense either. Central Arkansas’ mascot had better eat his Wheaties to prepare for this week’s matchup.

6

Murray State (1-0)

Score: 54 (+4)
Murray State’s win over NAIA Union will not get any style points on Twitter, but a win is a win. The next three weeks are the Racers’ toughest of the season with games at Louisville, at Western Michigan, and back home against Jacksonville State.

7

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Tennessee Tech (1-0)

Score: 36 (-4)
In a week of lopsided wins, the Golden Eagles did not exactly stand out, beating NAIA Kentucky Christian by an underwhelming twenty-six point margin. The Quarterback Wing revolution continues this weekend against the Sycamores of Indiana State.

8

Southeast Missouri (1-0)

Score: 34 (+1)
Our reaction to the Redhawks’ 77-0 win against an NAIA team was similar to the reaction after a nasty dunk. There are still some kinks to work out on offense, but last week’s win is a good momentum starter.

9

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Austin Peay (0-1)

Score: 20 (0)
As we suggested last week, the Governors are consistently at the bottom of the OVC. Coach Kirby Cannon thinks time will help the team get over Saturday’s shutout loss to Memphis.
