Every Tuesday, the OVC coaches hold a teleconference. Here’s some of the highlights of the call.
Murray State head coach Chris Hatcher on Louisville: “I was hoping they would go into triple overtime…have a big fight and have 40 players get kicked out.”
Hatcher on giving up 26 points (19 defensively) to Union College, an NAIA school: “I thought our first-team played well. When we put out backups in…I felt we were wide-eyed.”
Eastern Illinois head coach Kim Dameron on his two quarterbacks: “We saw some bright spots out of both of them…don’t see doing a whole different moving forward.” I asked for clarification if he planned on using both this week, to which he responded “Absolutely.”
Jacksonville State John Grass on his team’s play against Michigan State: “Our front 7, defensively, played really physically…they had a hard time running between the tackles.”
Southeast Missouri head coach Tom Matukewicz on what his team needs to work on after a lopsided win against Missouri Baptist: “Our screen game…was poor at best…On defense, we had two third-and long…and they converted…On special teams, punts, we let the ball bounce three times.”
Austin Peay head coach Kirby Cannon on how a young team responds to a big loss compared to an experienced team: “It takes some time to get over debacles like Saturday was.”
UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson on his team’a play against Kentucky: “Disappointed, not only in the loss, but how we played. We’re a better football team than that.”
Simpson on his two quarterbacks: “We’re going to do whatever we have to do to be productive on offense…If you have one that was that good, you wouldn’t need two.”
Tennessee State head coach Rod Reed on his team’s game against Edward Waters: “It almost looked like a preseason NFL game with all the penalties.” He added, “”Conditions didn’t allow us to throw the football,” before saying the conditions were the worst he can ever remember being a part of, at any level.
Eastern Kentucky head coach Dean Hood said he went into the Robert Morris game this week not planning on playing quarterback Jared McClain, but made the decision to switch quarterbacks because Bennie Connie, “kind of bogged down,” and struggled running the offense. Hood added, “No question, Jared [McClain] had the better game and sparked us.” Hood says he’ll look at this entire week before deciding on a Week 2 starter.
For the second straight week, Tennessee Tech head coach Watson Brown was not on the call.
