We have some moving and shaking on the Power Rankings, as we near the start of conference season. Two teams are separating themselves from the pack, but there are still a lot of questions as we move through September.

Jacksonville State (1-1)

Score (of 100): 100 (+6 from last wk)
It's our first unanimous selection at the top of the Power Rankings for the season, as Jacksonville State picked up an impressive overtime win against ranked Chattanooga on the road. The defense was impressive, and the offense did just enough for the win. It's an off week for the Gamecocks, before they host non D-I West Alabama.

2 (+2)

Eastern Kentucky (2-0)

Score: 90 (+14)
The biggest movers of the week, EKU is the only other undefeated team through just two weeks, and along with Jacksonville State, have a quality resume win for FCS Playoff contention. After a down Week 1 performance, Bennie Connie was the better QB in week 2.

3 (-1)

Eastern Illinois (0-2)

Score: 73 (-18)
We knew it coming into the season, but last week was another reminder: This isn't last year's Panthers team. EIU struggled to move the ball, losing at home to Southern Illinois. All-OVC preseason selection Sheppard Little has fewer than 100 yards rushing through two games, and needs to become a much bigger part of the offense.

4 (-1)

Tennessee State (1-1)

Score: 68 (-11)
The Tigers lose on the road to Alabama State, but most concerning was the play of senior quarterback Michael German. The Tigers dug themselves an early hole, and were forced to pass much more often than head coach Rod Reed would have liked. The result -- three interceptions, and an early season loss for the Tigers.

UT Martin (0-2)

Score: 60 (+4)
Last week was a reminder for the Skyhawks that it's not who leads the longest, but who leads at the end of the game. Following an 0-2 start, and with Mississippi State still on the schedule in November, it may be OVC Title or bust if the Skyhawks hope to make the FCS Playoffs. (Or, at least, one magical SEC upset)

Murray State (1-1)

Score: 55 (+1)
The Racers are off this week, so we'll have to wait even longer to see how they do against even-level competition. Right now, it appears to be situation normal in Racer camp: The offense is good, the defense less so. The interesting issue, the QB battle appears open again, after a solid performance from KD Humphries in the second half against Louisville.

7 (+1)

Southeast Missouri (1-1)

Score: 45 (+11)
The loss of DeMichael Jackson for six weeks is a big blow for the Redhawks, who looked impressive in the second half on the road at Kansas last week. They hit the road this week to face #14 Southern Illinois, and there could be a lot of pressure on Kyle Snyder to move the ball with Jackson out. SEMO looks improved, but we may not know just how good they could have been this year.

8 (-1)

Tennessee Tech (1-1)

Score: 30 (-6)
Sure, it's only been two weeks, but there's little to no evidence to support that head coach Watson Brown's quarterback wing experiment is working. Tennessee Tech's offense was flat against in a lopsided loss at Indiana State. They also have a week off to work on things before conference play opens.

Austin Peay (0-1)

Score: 20 (0)
The Governors took Week 2 off, meaning we can officially report they didn't lose. Yayyy! A lot of work still to be done, but the Governors open up a renovated stadium this week, which should be a nice treat for fans.

Apologies, for this post the comments are closed.
