Hmmm. There are really good games here. And then, somehow, EKU has the second easiest schedule, based on last year’s RPI, of the 10 schools we’ve looked at so far. That’s actually all that abnormal, in our three years of looking at the Colonels’ schedules.

Key Numbers:

Average Non-Conference RPI: 215.5

Average Home Non-Conference RPI: 252.2

Average Non-Conference Road Travel Distance: 512.0 miles*

Non-Division I opponents: 2

*Both the Utah and Florida road swings were counted as one trip — because I can’t imagine someone would go for one, and not the other.

Thoughts

That period around the beginning of December: at BYU, hosting Valparaiso, and traveling down the road to Kentucky is a great week and a half of basketball. Traveling to IUPUI and bringing in ETSU the next week is also pretty solid — really creating a great two-week stretch or so.

But there’s no argument to make here for this being a tough schedule. That’s not necessarily a bad thing — the average OVC RPI is below 215, which is the average of EKU’s non-conference opponents. It’s just noteworthy — when other expected OVC title contenders in your division like Morehead State and Belmont play much, much tougher games throughout the schedule.

That being said, EKU should easily be over .500 entering conference play. Confidence boost? Maybe? They’d probably like to get OVC play off to a better start than they did last year.

Road Trip to make

Going to IUPUI is the only one that’s a realistic drive. But the two game Florida swing in intriguing. Miami is not a basketball powerhouse, and FAU is a beautiful area of the state. Also making it upset-worthy — it’s during winter break, meaning students will mostly be gone. I’m not calling it, I’m just saying there’s a chance…

Don’t waste your money…

In November. The home slate is much, much better in December.
