A lot of people joke about Jacksonville State basketball. In fact, a lot of JSU students joke about JSU basketball. In years past, their schedule seemed to reflect their status as the second-tier sports program in Jacksonville, Alabama. This year’s slate, though, doesn’t feature a single team with a 300+ RPI last year. The road slate is tough, there are four home games against Division-I programs. This is…actually really good.
|Last Season RPI||Travel Distance (mi)|

|31||@ Tennessee State|

|26||@ Eastern Kentucky|
|28||@ Morehead State|
Average Non-Conference RPI: 200.0
Average Home Non-Conference RPI: 227.0
Average Non-Conference Road Travel Distance: 401.7 miles*
Non-Division I opponents: 2
*Both the Louisville / Marshall and Colorado road swings were counted as one trip — because I can’t imagine someone would go for one, and not the other.
The average RPI was actually lower than I though at first glance, because there are good opponents, good road swings, solid home games. It’s not the toughest in the OVC, but when we look at schools that go nearly a month without a home game, (*cough* Tennessee State *cough*) or schools whose home slate is laughable (*cough* UT Martin *cough*) this is a really well put together slate. Both the long road trips have two games worth watching, for fans that make the journeys. The Memphis game in February is a bit weird, and I’m not sure Dartmouth is going to fill the Pete. But if you’re a JSU basketball fan, I’m guessing you’re quite pleased.
Road Trip to make
I’ve been to the YUM! Center in Louisville, and it’s an NBA caliber arena, if just a bit undersized. It’s an absolutely great place to watch a basketball game, and if you can make the swing to Marshall three-days before, it could be a great little mini-basketball vacation.
Don’t waste your money…
I don’t like choosing the non Division-I games here because it’s just too obvious. So I’m actually going to pick a road game here — Alabama A&M. It’s a very winnable game, but there’s three great home games surrounding it. Save the money, see the Gamecocks at the Pete.
