Another women’s final four in Nashville? More men’s early round games in the Music City? It appears to be ready to happen sooner rather than later. According to The Tennessean, OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche and some Nashville leaders will make their final pitch to the NCAA this Thursday, with a decision to be announced possibly as soon as next week. One unnamed NCAA official apparently told the paper during last March’s tournament that returning to Nashville was a “no-brainer.”
It could happen as soon as 2018.
Oh, and for the OVC fans hoping to eventually return to Bridgestone Arena for the OVC tournament — either the SEC men or women will play their tournament there every year until 2022. So…that’s not wholly likely to happen.
Five more OVC television games were announced today, on the “American Sports Network,” which is less a TV Network and more like the old “Jefferson Pilot sports,” regional games on various networks. So, it’s unclear how many of these games, if any, will actually be available in your area — the exact station will apparently be named at a later date.
These are also all conference games, which is nice.
Here’s the slate:
- Sunday, January 25
Belmont at Tennessee State, 5:30 p.m. CT
- Thursday, February 12
Tennessee State at Tennessee Tech, 7:00 p.m. CT
- Thursday, February 19
UT Martin at Eastern Illinois, 7:00 p.m. CT
- Sunday, February 22
Southeast Missouri at Eastern Illinois, 5:30 p.m. CT
- Thursday, February 26
SIUE at Austin Peay, 7:00 p.m. CT
In case you’ve forgotten…We have real, live, meaningful basketball this Friday. Like, real games. That count and stuff!
There is one thing I find odd again this year: Why is everyone, (at least, almost everyone) so determined to kick off the season on Friday? It’s still high school football season (playoffs at that, at least in Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee) and there’s a reason teams tend to play more games on Saturday throughout the year — higher attendance. But because the rules allow the first game to be played Friday evening, everyone is falling over backwards to make it happen.
And no one watches TV on Friday’s, so it’s not a play for ratings.
That being said, we have a pretty fantastic slate. Belmont travels to Wright State. Jacksonville State is at Marshall. Houston heads to Murray State. Eastern Illinois at Missouri State. Plenty of good basketball for the taking.
Our first game previews will be up in the next few days, as will our first spreads for our basketball Pick ‘Em. And, one thing you may have missed this summer, is we unveiled our new “game hub” pages, which debut with this week’s games, which we’re certain offers more info than any free site out there. (And even some paid sites) If there’s something you want to see on those pages, you should let us know, and we’ll try to implement it.
The offseason is nearly over.
