Tennessee State University fell to Vanderbilt University on Sunday night 78-46 at Memorial Gymnasium.

Charles Tucker led the team with nine points and put in four assists as the Commodores held TSU without a double-digit scorer. Xavier Richards added seven points and led the team with six boards.

Vanderbilt was led by Luke Kornet who scored 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting (3-for-4 from behind the arc). His play was what gained the Commodores early separation from which they never looked back.

TSU headed into the locker room with an 18-point deficit despite cutting the Commodore lead to four with 4:32 left in the half. The Tiger defense did a good job of holding Vanderbilt star Damian Jones to four points in the opening 20 minutes.

The Tigers had four players with four points, apiece. Richards, Tucker, Demontez Loman, and Darreon Reddick all made a pair of buckets for TSU.

Foul trouble cost the Tigers the ability to deny the Vanderbilt post the ball and opened up scoring opportunities for Damian Jones (13 points). TSU had held the Vanderbilt leading scorer without a point for the first 16 minutes of the game.

The Tigers were held to just 30 percent shooting in the second frame (32 percent, overall) while the Commodores shot 66 percent.

Christian Crockett made his TSU debut tonight after missing the first three games with an injury. His return will add much needed depth as he scored five and grabbed four rebounds.

The Tigers will next take on Virginia on Tuesday. TSU travels to Charlottesville at 7:00 p.m. for the second part of the Barclay’s Tournament.
