The SIUE Cougars entered the 2014-2015 basketball campaign with high expectations. After 2 games, those expectations are still high but may need tempered just a little.
The season started on Friday November 14th against visiting Harris-Stowe. It is always difficult to judge a team when it plays a non-Division 1 opponent. The Cougars rolled to a 104-56 victory. They were led by Dovine Stewarts 20 points. It is always good to start off with a win to build confidence for the season. The key is to build on the confidence with the next game.
The Cougars hosed IPFW on Monday November 17th. The Mastodons are a preseason favorite in the Summit league. This is a good test for the Cougars and a chance to build momentum. They failed this test as the Cougars fell 74-71. SIUE held an 8 point lead midway through the 2nd half but let the Mastodons go on a 16-0 run that ultimately proved to be too much to come back from. The Cougars were once again led by Dovine Stewart who had 24 points.
SIUE now takes the long trip to Portland, OR for games Saturday against Portland and Monday against Portland St. Both games will be a challenge for the Cougars as both teams are 2-0 on the young season. Portland St has an impressive win at the USC Trojans to start the season. For SIUE to be successful, they will need more balanced scoring. They also need to play the full 40 minutes and avoid long scoring droughts.
This team is looking to gel and become a force on the OVC. There are opportunities on the schedule to gain strong victories and momentum.
Also, all Cougar fans wish the Men’s Soccer team luck as they make their return to the NCAA Division 1 soccer tournament for the first time in 22 years on Friday with a match against Northwestern. Good luck!
