It’s not often an OVC team can say they beat a Big East team on the boards. But UT Martin’s rebounding prowess would be undone by turnovers, free-throws, and three-point defense as Heath Schroyer‘s new-look Skyhawks fell 79-63 at Marquette.
The Skyhawks had a 16-13 lead in the game’s first eight minutes — before a 18-3 Marquette run would put UT Martin behind for good. UTM pulled within eight at the half, only to see the Golden Eagles start the second half on a 12-2 run, effectively putting the game out of reach.
A trio of newcomers scored in double-figures for the Skyhawks, led by Deville Smith’s 12 points. Twymond Howard and Alex Anderson each added 11 points for UT Martin while Marshun Newell provided nine points, five rebounds and a team-high three assists. Myles Taylor snared a game-high 11 rebounds, put only played 15 minutes before fouling out.
Marquette was led by Jajuan Johnson, who scored a game-high 20 points. Juan Anderson (16 points, seven rebounds), Matt Carlino (11 points, seven assists) and Deonte Burton (10 points) also cracked double-figures in the scoring column for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles led by 14 points with 3:39 left in the first half before a trey by Newell and back-to-back buckets by Howard whittled UT Martin’s deficit back down to single-digits at 37-29.
The second half was all about runs. Following Marquette’s 12-2 run, a Newell layup ignited an 8-2 UT Martin run that allowed the Skyhawks to pull back within ten. Marquette would soon respond with eight unanswered on their own, before Smith went on a solo mini-run, accounting for eight of the next nine points to pull UT Martin within 12 points with seven minutes left. But Marquette then pieced together a 11-3 run — putting the game out of reach for good.
UT Martin returns to action on Monday, Nov. 17 when it visits the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Tipoff from the Convocation Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
