Murray State offense
After a 27-point loss on the road, head coach Steve Prohm said, in an interview for WPSD Local 6, his team played “selfish.” It showed on the scoreboard, as Xavier handed Murray State their worst loss since 2002, 89-62.
Murray quickly fell behind with an 11-0 run to open the game for the Musketeers. After falling further behind, The Racers made a move and cut the Musketeers’ lead to 10 when Payne scored in the half-court and then made a three-point play when he was fouled on a fast break. MSU trailed 26-16 with 10:17 to go before half.
By half, Xavier pushed the deficit to 20. MSU faced a 52-32 deficit after Payne was fouled on a drive with 1.8 seconds left and made a pair from the line.
Cameron Payne and Jarvis Williams each hit a basket to start the second half to get the Racers to 52-36, but MSU could not get any closer.
Payne led the Racers with 23 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists, while Williams added 14 points and Tyler Rambo 11.
The Racers fell to 2-2, while Xavier improved to 4-0
The Racers now get ready for their appearance in the Challenge In Music City this weekend in Nashville. This first-time event at the site of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, Municipal Auditorium, gives the Racers three games in three days. MSU faces the Portland Pilots Friday and the Valparaiso Crusaders Saturday, each with a 7:30 p.m. tip. Sunday’s game tips at 3:30 p.m. when the Racers face the Drake Bulldogs. The weekend features six games with each team competing in a round-robin format.
