Murray State

Record: 16-4 (6-0)
If Murray State gets past their next two games, (at SIUE, vs EKU) who beats Murray? This is a team that has a realistic chance of running the table in conference the way they're playing. I'm not saying they will -- teams have off nights, after all -- but the the Racers are just playing at another level from the rest of the OVC right now.

Eastern Illinois

Record: 12-7 (6-1)
On my trip home from Charleston, I was asked, "Who is the second best team in the conference?" I think it's still EIU. Murray State deserves a lot of the credit, but the Panthers didn't play particularly well either, missing a lot of open looks. I'm not sure they win if they hit them, but I think Eastern Illinois has the talent to continue their conference run right now.

Belmont

Record: 12-7 (4-2)
I really struggled with who to put third, but here was the tiebreaker for me: Belmont is 4-2, and shooting just 31% from three-point range in OVC play. Are they really going to keep shooting this badly from deep? I'd be surprised...

UT-Martin-Power-Rankings
UT Martin

Record: 11-7 (3-2)
Depth: a five letter word that is currently the Skyhawks downfall. They've struggled late in games, and I think that's only going to get worse as we get deeper into the year. If Myles Taylor weren't injured, I think UTM would be a threat to make a deep run. They're still good, but I just don't think they have the bodies.

Eastern Kentucky

Record: 11-7 (3-2)
I hesitate to put the Colonels so low, but right now they're a one-man wrecking crew, and you can't sustain wins that way. On defense, if you can avoid turnovers, (which is no easy tasks) you're going to get open shots. This team still has the talent to rise above the fractured East Division, but it can't all fall on Corey Walden's shoulders.

6

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Morehead State

Record: 8-13 (3-3)
When conference play started, the Eagles were seemingly left for dead. They've responded, and they're in the hunt right now in the East. If they can't figure out how to operate out of the half-court, though, they'll struggle to string together wins.

7

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Southeast Missouri

Record: 9-10 (3-3)
After years of high-powered offense and no defense, this year's team is...weird. Their defense is solid, but they just don't have the offensive firepower. Jarekious Bradley and Nino Johnson are still very talented, and if they get it going, don't count out the Redhawks.

8

SIU-Edwardsville-Power-Rankings
SIUE

Record: 8-10 (4-3)
In retrospect, the Cougars 3-1 start isn't as impressive at it looked at the time. Depending on other outcomes today, a loss to Murray State could drop SIUE into a tie for fourth in the competitive West. The consistency just isn't there right now, but we've seen flashes of a really good team. Can that team show up for 40-minutes, night after night?

9

Tennessee-Tech-Power-Rankings
Tennessee Tech

Record: 9-11 (1-6)
Sigh. I love Steve Payne, but no other team has been as disappointing in conference play. There's still time to turn things around, and I still think TTU has the talent to make it happen. But a loss to EKU today would be the Golden Eagles seventh conference loss. Can they go 6-2 down the stretch? Today's game hosting EKU is big.

10

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Jacksonville State

Record: 9-12 (2-5)
The Gamecocks picked up a great win over Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, and are only 1.5 games out of eighth. Darion Rackley has been great, but they need another consistent scorer to make a run to the OVC Tournament.

Austin Peay

Record: 6-13 (1-4)
The Governors are on the verge of missing their third straight OVC Tournament. Those are words I never figured I'd type about a team that was, not that long ago, one of the great programs in the Ohio Valley Conference.

12

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Tennessee State

Record: 3-17 (0-5)
I've said it all year: don't look at the wins and losses. I like what Dana Ford is doing. TSU's defense is good, especially given it's youth. Almost everyone will return a year more experienced next year; Ford just needs to find a scorer in the JUCO ranks.
