So yesterday, I had to get a root canal. Fun times.
…I swear I’m getting to the football part. Bear with me here.
Once the dentist was done
torturing fixing my tooth, I saw that another FBS transfer, ex-Texas Tech CB Nigel Bethel, (No. 1 in the photo above) was joining Eastern Kentucky, another power five player joining the Colonels. (Although nowhere near as high profile as former Mizzou QB Maty Mauk.)
Bethel was a four-star recruit out of college, and a track star in addition to football. He had some off-the-field problems prior to his true-freshman year, and was kicked off a team for a short while, before being reinstated. There haven’t been any other known issues since that incident.
Bethel made five starts last year for the Red Raiders, and finished the season with 43 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and 12 pass breakups. He’ll be a junior this year, which means two years of eligibility, unless he plans on using EKU as a quick path to the NFL.
While still in my post-root canal haze, I posed this question on twitter.
The answers from #JSUTwitter were swift…

Oh. Okay then.
In early voting for my OVC preseason ballot, JSU and EKU are a clear No. 1 and No. 2. (Although, it should be pointed out that Sporting News picked Eastern Illinois second, and EKU third.) It appears the ‘arms race’ is alive at well at the top of the OVC, which is great news for them.
…probably less than great news, though, for the teams hoping to break through this season.
