EKU’s tweet announcing their non-conference schedule raised an eyebrow: “@CoachMcHale calls it the Colonels’ best non-conference schedule in 20 years.”

Well, while I haven’t been following the Colonels for that long, I can say that it’s without question stronger than the schedules we were used to seeing under Jeff Neubauer. (Who seems to be taking his ‘win a lot of easy games’ philosophy to Fordham) Here’s the list:

Yeah, it’s tougher. How does it stack up?

Average Non-Conference RPI (using 2015-16 RPI numbers): 162.2
Last Year —  227.0

Top-100 RPI Opponents: vs UNC Wilmington (52), at Texas Tech (50), at Louisville (16)
Last Year —  2

Bottom-100 RPI opponents (252-351): vs Idaho State (261), vs Jacksonville (287)

Non-Division I opponents: 2

Early Benchmark — December 10th at Ball State: The Colonels have a few good games against teams in that 100-200 RPI range at home — but this is the first solid mid-major opponents they play on the road. It’s part of a long stretch without a home game, and comes three days after a trip to Florida. The Cardinals made the CIT last year and knocked out a pair of OVC opponents (Tennessee State and UT Martin) in the opening two rounds. This is the kind of team EKU must be able to beat if they’re going to make a run at the top teams in the conference.

Best road trip — December 19th at Norfolk State: Other than Cancun, there’s isn’t really a great two-game road swing on the schedule where you could make a long weekend out of it. But if you just aren’t into heading to Mexico, why not head to Norfolk, watch a winnable game on the road, and spend some time on the beach?

Other Notes: EKU goes more than three weeks without a home game — but it falls in the period when students are out of school, which is the best possible scenario for such a long stretch. The Colonels second game in Cancun will be either against NJIT (183rd in RPI last season) or Georgia State. (177)
