Racers schedule 2

So how does the mid-majortasic schedule fare? Our breakdown:

Average Non-Conference RPI (using 2015-16 RPI numbers): 152.5
Last Year — 183.2

Top-100 RPI Opponents: at MTSU (77), at Evansville (92), at Ole Miss (98), at South Dakota State (30)
Last Year — 3

Bottom-100 RPI opponents (252-351): vs UMKC (288), vs Alabama A&M (331)

Non-Division I opponents: 2

Early Benchmark — November 11th vs Illinois State: ‘Early benchmark’ games don’t get much earlier than this. Now that the Racers long ‘home-opener winning streak’ is gone after the loss vs Houston two years ago, it’s very interesting to see such an aggressive game to kick off the season. The Redbird are coming off a ‘disappointing’ 18-14 campaign in a year in which they simply didn’t score many points. That team featured five juniors and four freshman — so expect the Redbirds, who did manage a 12-6 finish in the tough MVC, to come back strong this season.

Best road trip — ???: No seriously, I’m at a bit of a loss here. Racer fans are used to going to Carbondale, Murphysboro, and Evansville — and those are all good games. But they’re regular. The Bowling Green tournament does get your three games in three days, which is nice, but only Green Bay is really expected to be a quality opponent. And I don’t even want to know how the Racers plan on managing their brutal Ole Miss – South Dakota State road swing in December. So…

Well, I really like Evansville’s arena. There’s that.

Other Notes: The usual measurement for schedule strength is top-100 RPI teams, but four others on the Racers schedule finished in the top-150 a season ago. (Illinois State, Green Bay, SIU, and Wright State) From a pure fan standpoint, if you’re going to play two non-Division I games, Murray State is doing it the right way: play them when the students are out.

  1. Kenneth Henley:
I hope UTM can get to the point where they can get home games with schools like Detroit & Wright State.Arkansas State comes to town every other year but that's a geographical benefit instead of a rivalry. It'll be interesting to see if Central Arkansas returns a game to the Elam Center.I think the Skyhawks be a little better than last year's team but we'll see.
  2. Kevin Kroeper:
With the roster shakeup after last season, this Racer schedule will be very interesting. There's really no telling how it will play out - but I can feel confident in 2 predictions. 1. Effort will not be lacking when we play, and 2. We will be playing in Nashville the first Friday in March. Go Racers!
