Morehead State might be the most interesting case in the tournament. They have two wins over Tennessee State, gave Belmont a scare at home. They want to play at a breakneck pace, but they’re far from the most disciplined team, and give a lot of their opponents a night of free-throw practice during the games. Are they tourney fodder, or an upset bid in waiting?
Over the next few days, we’ll look at some issues surrounding this week’s Ohio Valley Conference tournament. We start today with a look into the OVC Tournament’s history, and what it can tell us about predicting a champion.
Momentum. It’s defined as the impetus gained by a moving object, and it’s a buzz word used often this time of year. Who has it, who doesn’t. But does it really matter?
In the end, there proved to only be one game of consequence today when it comes to the OVC Tournament, but that doesn’t mean others weren’t important. As many people want to talk about it “being a new season” and everyone has a chance, what happened today, and in the weeks previous are important to the outcome.
For four teams, the road ends today. We already know two teams who will be playing their last games of the season on this Saturday, but by the end of the night two others will join them.
But all in all, there’s not a lot of drama on the slate today. Not only are six teams safely in the OVC Tournament, we already know their seeds. And the result of one game could render the rest mute.
Of course, to the four teams fighting, and hoping for one of the final two spots in the tournament, there’s plenty to get excited about.
It was a wild and crazy night in the OVC. Here’s a short list of firsts and records from just four games last night:
- UT Martin won their first ever game in Murray against the Racers in 23 tries.
- SEMO hit an Ohio Valley Conference Record 20 3-pointers, breaking an 14-game losing streak in Clarksville.
- EKU won their 23rd game, breaking their school record for most wins in a season.
The only game without a first or record was a 101-100 game in regulation
Need To Know
Morehead State swept the season series, handing Tennessee State only their second loss at home on the season. Morehead State is locked as the 5th seed in next week’s OVC Tournament. Tennessee State is locked as the 4th seed. The teams will meet again in the quarterfinals if Morehead State gets past their first round opponent.
The OVC has released their official tiebreaker scenarios, which are attached below. These include the six-win scenarios I didn’t go into in-depth on yesterday, and some on higher seeds (such as EKU and Tennessee State)
