Our spring previews are moving on to two teams I think have great potential, and I have no problem telling you why. I also have no problem telling former EIU guard Taylor Jones what of I thought of his team last November. (And how those thoughts changed throughout the year.)
Belmont had long been known as “defending Atlantic Sun champions.” In fact, that was their title for their last two years in the conference, having won at least a share of the title the last three. Everyone knew that Belmont would quickly contend for an Ohio Valley Conference title. But few expected it to happen so soon.
And even fewer, if any, expected them to look so dominant while doing it.
With the first pre-draft combine out of the way, now many teams are holding their own, which is good news for one former OVC standout hoping to hear his name called on draft night. Former Murray State forward Ed Daniel will take part in a combine in Brooklyn on Thursday.
Eastern Illinois has announced the hiring of Rand Chappell as an assistant coach on the Panthers men’s basketball staff. Chappell replaces Bob Sundvold who accepted the head coaching position at NCAA Division II Missouri-St. Louis last week.
We continue our spring basketball previews today talking about the defending OVC Champions, the Belmont Bruins, as well as a quick preview of this week’s OVC baseball tournament. And I won’t give up on my campaign for the OVC to join the Atlantic Sun in moving their basketball tournament away from a central site, and give the games to the schools.
This past week, the Atlantic Sun announced a change to their conference tournament plans, one that goes against the common wisdom: Instead of holding the games at a neutral site, the highest seed will host each game.
There was a time, and it wasn’t all that long ago, that Austin Peay was a feared name in the Ohio Valley Conference. For six straight seasons, the Governors won at least 10-games in the conference, during a span of six straight winning seasons.
It’s only been two years since that streak ended. But it couldn’t have come at a worse time.
The Podcast is back! With our ridiculously early 2013-14 previews beginning next week with Austin Peay, I talk with Luke Thompson, beat writer for the Leaf Chronicle about the outlook for a team that’s fallen on hard times the past two seasons. And OVC Ball co-writer Tom Via joins me as we discuss the NBA combine, which is underway today and tomorrow with two OVC players taking part.
